Famous African-Americans
in Medicine
Dr. Charles Drew, physician, researcher, and surgeon, forged a new understanding of blood plasma that allowed blood to be stored for transfusions.
Ms. Mary Eliza Mahoney was the first black professional nurse in America.
Dr. Daniel Hale Williams founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, the first black-owned hospital in America. He is also credited with the world's first successful heart surgery, conducted in Chicago in 1893.
Dr. James McCune Smith was the first African American to earn a medical degree and practice medicine in the United States. He was also the first to own and operate a pharmacy, in New York City.
Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first African American woman to earn a medical degree.
Dr. William Augustus Hinton, the son of former slaves, became the first black professor at Harvard Medical School and gained an international reputation for his medical research.

Our school is a community of students  and staff who share a passion for building a strong academic foundation for today's youth. What makes V.T.T.M.A.A. unique is its focus on on the health professions, mathematics, and sciences. It is an academic program that encourages students to enter careers in health. In addition V.T.T.M.A.A. provides an academically rigorous curriculum that prepares students to enter the nation's best colleges and universities. Our close-knit community provides extraordinary support for our students, helping them achieve the dreams of their future. We have only high hopes for each school year and we are excited that you will be able to share in our success!

  • If you would like to give a monetary donation to VTTMAA, you can use the "Donate" button on the left. We appreciate any support you can provide.
  • The ENGAGE Scholars Saturday Program will be in full swing with the 2008-2009 school year. If any students needs additional help on assignments or tutoring, you are welcome to attend. It is held every Saturday from 10:00am - 12:00am, unless noted otherwise. Announcements regarding the cancellation of the program due to inclement weather or conflicting engagements will be placed on TS3 (http://www.bcpss.org) by Friday afternoon.
  • ALL STUDENTS MUST WEAR THEIR LAB COATS AND IDS! Failure to do so will result in loss of privileges and other consequences! The following vendors have lab coats
  • State of Maryland Required Documents for new AND continuous enrollment
    • Two (2) proofs of address
    • Three (3) working emergency phone numbers
    • Doctor's physical
    • Up-to-date immunization records (for incoming 9th graders)
